Social Impact Hackathon for High Schoolers

On November 2nd, 2019, the Palo Alto Global Shapers Hub is hosting a Social Impact Hackathon in San Francisco, which will bring together 25 students, nominated by 5 local high schools, who will work in teams on creating solutions to issues within their communities. Google San Francisco has graciously offered us their event space for the Social Impact Hackathon!

With the Social Impact Hackathon, our goal is to bring together Silicon Valley’s leading decision-makers from government, business, and civic organizations with 25 of the region’s top high school leaders to address the most pressing challenges facing the next generation.

How can you help?

We appreciate your support, and would love for you to help sponsor food/beverages or provide a monetary donation, more infos here. For contributions over $100, you'll receive an invitation from us to attend the event and meet the students! You may also contact us with questions and proposals.

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage a diverse selection of high school leaders to drive local innovation in Silicon Valley around the theme ‘Advancing impactful solutions for issues in our communities’. As part of their participation, the students will also receive mentorship and training for design thinking, social innovation, and community building.

Format

During this hackathon event, 5 teams of 5 students from 5 local high schools (one student from each high school per team) will pitch project ideas developed at the event to help solve issues in their local communities. Schools will be chosen to represent diverse interests in the neighborhoods throughout Silicon Valley.

The teams will be mentored by Global Shapers, and will present their proposals to a panel of judges at the end of the day. The judges, who are key decision makers from government, business, and civic organizations, will provide feedback on the proposals and choose a winning project to receive continued support from the Shapers.

We hope to implement this winning project in our community and achieve a real, lasting impact.
